Novel Wuthering Heights adalah salah satu novel klasik karya penulis Inggris, Emily Bronte. Saya lupa kapan tepatnya mulai bersentuhan dengan novel ini. Novel ini merupakan buku wajib baca pada semester itu. Karena tidak bisa mendapatkan versi bahasa Inggrisnya di toko buku, diambillah kebijakan dari dosen kalau kita boleh memfotokopi novel ini dari dosen. Alamak, setelah difotokopi pun, itu novel tebalnya masih membuat kita nelen ludah. 

Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan adalah bahasa Inggris klasik. Jaman dulu banget. Jadi gak heran ada perbedaan tulisan dengan tulisan bahasa Inggris sekarang. Sehingga bukan hal yang mudah bagi kami saat itu untuk bisa memahami isi dari novel tersebut.

Beberapa tahun yang lalu, saya sempat kebingungan ketika harus menghadapi skripsi. Jika kebanyakan teman lain sudah tahu dan mempersiapkan bahan-bahan untuk skripsi, saya masih berkutat novel apa yang akan saya pakai untuk bahan skripsi saya. Iya, novel, karena saya kuliah di sastra inggris. Saya lebih memilih novel daripada puisi. Kalau puisi lebih berat untuk mengkajinya menurut saya loh ya. Saat itu saya tidak mau mengambil novel yang sudah banyak dikaji oleh orang lain. Karena terlalu popular di kalangan dosen hehe. Akhirnya, setelah menimbang dan saya pun memutuskan untuk mengambil novel dari penulis Pearl .S. Buck yang judulnya The New Year (Tahun Baru). Waktu itu saya ambil teori konflik untuk mengkajinya.
